MULTAN: Employees of Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU) Multan went on strike on Saturday against delay in appointment of the new vice-chancellor.
The Employees Welfare Association, Academic Staff Association and Officers Welfare Association of the university had announced the strike on Friday.Reportedly, BZU controller and administration offices were closed for the first time in history of the university.University transport remained almost dysfunctional after the contractor suspended fuel supply over nonpayment of Rs 10.5 million. However, the BZU transport will operate on Sunday to facilitate students who would reach university from different parts of South Punjab to take entrance test being organised by University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, for admission to engineering classes.Preparations for BA/BSc result were in final stages and sources in the controller examinations office said staff was also on strike. They, however, added that even if they announced BA/BSc results, they would have no resources to dispatch result cards to candidates.Sources said that university employees also locked offices and the main gate of the university on Saturday. Employees' representatives Abdul Quddus Sohaib and others said the VC had the financial powers to approve a new budget and employees would get salaries after orders from the VC. Moreover, university's electricity bills also remain unpaid, prompting Wapda to levy surcharge.They demanded that the new VC should be appointed without delay for smooth functioning of all sections of the varsity.
