G8 leaders ask Gaddafi to quit

The leaders of the G8 urged Libyan President Moamer Gaddafi to quit.

They said Gaddafi had lost all legitimacy and must step down.

US President Obama said that Gaddafi and his government had failed to fulfill their responsibility to protect the Libyan population and had lost all legitimacy, adding that he had no future in a free and democratic country and he must go now.

The leaders of Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia and the United States were meeting in the northern French resort of Deauville on the second and final day of the Group of Eight summit.
