Islamabad: June 28, 2011: The Pakistan Council for Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) plans to construct 11 laboratories building in different cities, which will help to improve quality of drinking water.
According to sources in PCRWR, these labs will be constructed in Muzaffarabad, Mianwali, Sargodha, Sialkot, Sahiwal, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Khuzdar, Lorali, Jamrud and Badin.
An amount of Rs2 billion has been allocated in new fiscal year 2011-12 for the projects of Ministry of Science and Technology.
This allocation is almost three times of the last years’ revised allocation.
Sources further said that monitoring of 2000 water supply schemes and installation of 18 water filtration plants for demonstration purposes was also under consideration.
Besides this, four water harvesting reserviors will be constructed in Balochistan.
Infrastructure of three water quality laboratories will be strengthened through purchase of equipment, sources said.
Since its inception, PCRWR has played its role as a national research organisation by undertaking and promoting applied as well as basic research in various disciplines of water sector, specially, irrigation, drainage, surface and groundwater management, groundwater recharge, watershed management, desertification control, rainwater harvesting, water quality assessment and monitoring, and development of innovative water resource management, conservation and quality improvement technologies etc
