ISLAMABAD, Mar 21: Ambassador of the Philippines Jesus I Yabes called on Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani and presented him a cheque of US $ 100,000 for the flood victims of Pakistan. In a meeting held at the PM House, the Prime Minister expressed his satisfaction over the cooperation between Pakistan and the Philippines in a number of areas. The Prime Minister stated that Pakistan has made continuous efforts to promote inter-communal and inter-faith harmony in the country and his government was ensuring due protection and progress of minority communities in Pakistan.
Noting that both Pakistan and the Philippines face the common threat of terrorism, he called for both the countries to enhance their cooperation in the war against terror and tackle the root causes of terrorism by drawing softer approach through inter-communal harmony.
The Prime Minister appreciated the Philippines’ support for Pakistan’s Full Dialogue Partnership (FDP) with ASEAN and hoped that the Philippines would continue to pro-actively pursue uplifting of ASEAN moratorium and approval of Pakistan’s long standing request for FDP in the near future.
He also assured the Ambassador of Philippines that Pakistan would extend full support to the Philippines for the Observer Status in OIC but urged the Philippines to also register the support of other OIC countries and Secretary General of the Organization.
The Prime Minister stated that it was a matter of satisfaction that the volume of bilateral trade between the two sides had registered significant increase in the past two years.
He added that Pakistan could supply increased quantity of yarn fabric, cotton, garments, textiles, leather products, surgical instruments and sports equipment as well as rice and pharmaceutical to the Philippines.
He urged upon the Philippines’ corporate sector to avail the competitive prices and quality goods from Pakistan in this regard.
He also called for early commencement of Free Trade Agreement and preferential trade negotiations between the two countries to further solidify the commercial links.
The Prime Minister also availed this opportunity to convey his and his government’s heart-felt condolences over the loss of lives and destruction of properties in the Philippines in the recent flashed floods.
The Ambassador of the Philippines assured the Prime Minister of his country’s continued support for Pakistan’s case of Full Dialogue Partnership in ASEAN and for uplifting of moratorium imposed by ASEAN on its further expansion hopefully within this year.
He also agreed with the Prime Minister that both the countries should further enhance their cooperation at the international fora and keep striving for inter-faith and inter-cultural dialogue for the promotion of peace and to check the a phenomena of radicalism and extremism around the world.
