SIALKOT, March 20: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan said on Sunday that on the direction of Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani, the government would provide Rs 0.5 million to each family, whose dear ones lost their lives in the tragic Sialkot whirlwind incident. Five people were killed and 79 sustained injuries when a severe dust and windstorm hit Head Marala area of district Sialkot on Saturday.
Over 100 houses and shops were destroyed in the area which falls in the constituency of Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan. The worst affected areas include villages Bahadurpur, Dera Battian, Chakrala and Eidgah.
During a visit to Allama Iqbal Memorial Hospital Sialkot, the Minister besides announcing compensation for the family members of deceased, said that Rs. 1,00,000 each would be given to those who sustained injuries in the incident. She also enquired about the health of the injured.
Later, during her visit to the affected villages, the minister said that directions had been issued for restoration of electricity and telephone system in the areas on priority basis. She said that teams had been formed to estimate the total loss adding that grants for the reconstruction of destroyed houses and other properties would be issued soon.
She said the President, Prime Minister and the government shared the sufferings and pain of affected families. She assured that the Federal Government would fulfill its responsibilities regarding the rehabilitation of the affected people. She said the provincial government would also play its due role for their early rehabilitation.
She directed the hospital staff to provide all necessary treatment facilities to the injured persons.
